Strengthening Volunteer Board Development in rural PEI

Paula Gallant developed and facilitated a series of  Volunteer Board Development Workshops for all regions in Prince Edward Island during February and March 2012 as part of a project sponsored by Active Communities Inc and thanks in part to investments made by the federal and provincial governments.

The series of workshops were held across Prince Edward Island to assist economic development-based volunteer groups with the responsibilities and rewards of volunteering on a board. Attendees gained knowledge, a set of resources and examples to improve their own volunteer board. The topics covered in each session were Basic Roles and Responsibilities, Effective Board Meetings and Recruitment and Retention.

Participants’ comments included: “Although I have been on many boards, I learned a great deal from attending these sessions. This was an excellent use of my time.” and “There were many revelations that I will take back to my group and incorporate in our activities.”

“In the Winter of 2012 four members of the Friends of Covehead and Brackley Bays Watershed Board attended Paula Gallant’s training on “Volunteer Board Development” .  The content was invaluable as it enabled our organization to develop a  set of fully coordinated job descriptions and policies for the Board and its employees. We now have clearer administrative practices, and are better able to recruit volunteers and employees. In turn this has enhanced our credibility with the community, national and provincial granting agencies and other environmental groups.

Paula Gallant’s instructional skills motivated us to attend several weeks of classes. She has mastered active learning approaches that engage the audience, encourage exchange of viewpoints and make practical applications to different situations come to life. The materials she provided were clear, relevant and current. To top it off, her affable style made the classes a joy to attend.”
